Olympian Joins UK Sport Board
Nigel Walker has been appointed to the board of UK Sport, Richard Caborn, Minister for Sport, announced today.
In addition to his business and media expertise, the move brings further experience of the international sporting stage to the board with Nigel having competed in both athletics for Great Britain and Rugby Union for Wales.
Richard Caborn, said:
"I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Nigel Walker to the board of UK Sport. He has an illustrious sporting career winning medals and caps from sporting events held all over the World. His international sporting experience will make an invaluable contribution to UK Sport as it works to develop our success at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games."

"The UK Sport board has a tremendous responsibility in overseeing and directing work not just in high performance sport but in international relations, major events and anti-doping as well, all against the backdrop of London 2012. Notes to Editors
1. Nigel represented Great Britain in the 110m high hurdles at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, and competed in more than 30 other national and international events winning bronze medals at the 1987 IAAF World Indoors Championships at Indianapolis, and at the European Championships. Nigel went on to play on the wing for Cardiff Rugby Football Club, and won 17 caps for Wales between 1993 and 1998.
2. Nigel has been the Head of Sport at BBC Wales since 2001. Nigel was a Development Officer at the Sports Council for Wales from 1993-2000 and Assistant Team Manager at the Welsh Rugby Union from 2000-2001, while at the same time developing his media career.
3. UK Sport is the organisation charged with leading sport in the UK to world class success. Primarily this means working with partner organisations to deliver medals at the Olympic and Paralympic Games, through its World Class Performance Programme. UK Sport also takes responsibility for activities best delivered at a UK level – such as the nation's anti-doping programme; bidding for and staging major events; increasing our sporting influence and activity overseas; and promoting good conduct, ethics and diversity in sport.
4. Board members are appointed by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport in consultation with the Scottish Executive, Welsh Assembly Government, and Northern Ireland Office. The time commitment is expected to be one-three days per month, remunerated at £208 per day.
