David Lammy And Andrew Adonis 'Laying The Foundations' For Built Environment Education
More schoolchildren will be encouraged to learn about the buildings in their communities, as Culture Minister David Lammy launched an innovative new teaching aid.
Laying the Foundations: Using the Built Environment to Teach, shows teachers how they can work with architecture and heritage organisations to unlock the learning potential of the places that surround schools. It has been published by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and the Department for Education and Skills (DfES).
David Lammy, Minister for Culture said at the launch on Friday:
"I am delighted to be here on the first day of Architecture Week launching an education project. Encouraging children and young people to learn about their local built environment helps them engage with the past, present and future of our communities."
Schools Minister Andrew Adonis said:
"Laying the Foundations illustrates the massive potential of the built environment as a resource for teachers and pupils. Creative approaches to teaching and learning using the built environment can engage pupils and contribute to improved standards as well as strengthening connections between schools and their communities."
"The forthcoming Education Outside the Classroom Manifesto aims to galvanise support to help schools and parents exploit the contribution that out of classroom learning can make to a child's education and personal development. Laying the Foundations is an excellent example of providers working in collaboration with government and I am delighted that it will form one of the government 'pledges' to the Manifesto."
Laying the Foundations involves architecture and heritage organisations working in collaboration with government to promote high quality education outside the classroom opportunities for children and young people. It contributes to DfES's developing work to create a Manifesto for Education Outside the Classroom, to be launched in the new school term.
Laying the Foundations demonstrates the versatility, scope and creativity that is brought to learning when teachers and pupils engage with the fabric of their communities; from projects that enable pupil participation in Building Schools for the Future to resources that help primary schools make links to their local history.
Notes to Editors
1. Laying the Foundations is being launched at the RIBA Trust's Architects in Residence exhibition (at the RIBA from 16-24 June) being held as part of Architecture Week that partnered 14-19 year-olds in six schools and colleges with six leading architecture practices to come up with alternative visions for the vast King's Cross redevelopment.
2. Laying the Foundations has been published in response to advice from the 2004 Joint DCMS/DfES Advisory Committee on Built Environment Education (JACBEE) chaired by Gillian Wolfe who said the learning applications of the built environment should be promoted more widely. Further information is available at www.culture.gov.uk/architecture_and_design
3. DfES's Manifesto for Education Outside the Classroom will be launched in the new school term. It is intended to be a 'movement', or joint undertaking which anyone, including providers, charities, schools and local authorities can sign up to. The main aim of the Manifesto is to work in partnership to provide all children and young people with the chance to learn outside the classroom.
