Glossary

Protection Zone/ Surveillance Zone – 3km and 10km radius zones around the site of an avian influenza outbreak case. Movement restrictions are placed on poultry, their products and other captive birds. Markets, fairs and shows prohibited.

Restricted Zone – a 1Km radius zone around the site of an outbreak, to control movements of poultry and poultry products.

Wild Bird Risk Area – an additional zone, beyond Protection Zones and Surveillance Zones, in which poultry and captive birds should be kept housed.

A/H5N1 - highly pathogenic avian flu

CCC – Civil Contingencies Committee. The CCC is to “consider, in an emergency, plans for assuring the supplies and services essential to the life of the community and to supervise their prompt and effective implementation where required”

Clinical attack rate - percentage of the population who become ill from infection by a specific flu virus.

Case fatality rate - percentage of people who become ill and subsequently die from infection by a specific flu virus.

Swine Flu - Influenza A (H1N1)

UK Flu Plan - UK Influenza Pandemic Contingency Plan, which outlines the UK’s plan for responding to an influenza pandemic. It is based on the framework recommended by the World Health Organization for national pandemic plans.

WHO - The World Health Organization is the United Nations’ specialized agency for health. WHO's objective is “the attainment, by all peoples, of the highest possible level of health.” Its Global Influenza Programme’s mission is to contribute to reducing death and disease due to annual influenza epidemics and prepare for the next influenza pandemic.
