Children's Play
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is the lead government department on play policy. DCMS has an annual budget of around £500,000 for Children's Play, which provides funding for:
The Children's Play Council (CPC), which conducts a policy and research programme, including production of Playtoday, a free magazine for the sector. The CPC also hosts the Play Safety Forum, an independent body made up of the key agencies involved in regulation and good practice guidance, and services the Play Policy Forum, a UK multi-agency group of national organisations from the public, private and voluntary sectors with an interest in children's play.
The Children's Play Information Service, which offers advice and guidance on play related issues to the public.
SkillsActive, the Sector Skills Council for play workers, which is developing a playworker training and education programme.
Also as part of the response to the review, Tessa Jowell, Secretary of State, announced that consideration would be given to how to take forward a more strategic approach to play policy. A cross departmental group was established in July 2005 and this is now evolving into a virtual network on play. Membership of the network includes DCMS and representatives from the following:
KIDS - organisation promoting play and opportunity for disabled children
