Acceptance in Lieu (AIL)
The Acceptance in Lieu Panel is based at The Council for Museums, Libraries and Archives (MLA). The Panel will advise the Secretary of State and their Ministerial counterparts in the developed administrations as to whether an offered object is pre-eminent under the following criteria:
- That the object has an especially close association with our history and national life
- That is of especial artistic or art-historical interest
- That it is of especial importance for the study of some particular branch of art, learning our history
- That it has an especially close association with a particular historic setting
The Panel will recommend to the Minister that any object which is considered pre-eminent should be accepted into public ownership under the scheme.
Further details on the scheme including other categories of objects which could qualify, and how the Panel also advises on valuation, condition, and allocation of the objects, can be found on MLA's website.
