National Endowment for Science, Technology & the Arts (NESTA)
The National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA) was set up by Act of Parliament in 1998. It is funded by an endowment from the National Lottery and uses the interest to invest in outstanding ideas and the people who have them, often much earlier than other funders.
By supporting this talent, NESTA hopes to help maximise the country's creative potential and increase the UK's capacity for innovation
The Act sets out three means by which NESTA should achieve its objects:
- to help talented individuals (or groups of such individuals) in the fields of science, technology or the arts to achieve their potential;
- to help people to turn inventions or ideas in the fields of science, technology or the arts into products and services which can be effectively exploited and the rights to which can be adequately protected; and
- to contribute to public knowledge and appreciation of science, technology and the arts.
