The UK Film Council
The Department established the Film Council to be the lead organisation for the UK film industry. The Film Council formally came into being on 1 April 2000. It unveiled the first stage of its strategy in May 2000 and launched its Stage Two strategy in November 2002.
The UK Film Council aims to deliver for the first time a coherent strategy for the development of film culture and the film industry. The UK Film Council provides strategic leadership for the film industry, eliminating gaps and overlaps in provision, and encouraging greater effectiveness and efficiency.
The UK Film Council's two main objectives are:
- To develop film culture by improving access to, and education about, the moving image
- To develop a sustainable UK film industry
Some of the Film Council's initiatives include:
- Helping to ensure the UK can supply sufficient skilled industry professionals
- Facilitating exports and inward investment
- Providing a broader range of films to a wider audience
The UK Film Council is a Lottery distributor in its own right, which means that for the first time, there is a guaranteed share of Lottery funding for film.
The UK Film Council has three production funds; the Film Development Fund, the New Cinema Fund and the Premiere Production Fund. The Heads of Funds are; Jenny Borgars, Paul Trijbits and Robert Jones respectively.
The UK Film Council is also responsible for the Training Fund, Specialised Distribution and Exhibition Fund, as well as funding the regional screen agencies in England.
