Qualifying criteria for British Films
DCMS issues two types of certificates in respect of films:
Co-productions
Co-productions made under the terms of one of the UK's bilateral film co-production agreements, or under the European Convention on Cinematographic Co-production, may be considered as:
a) British for the purposes of Schedule 1 to the 1985 Films Act, and therefore eligible for a Certificate of British Nature of a Film; and
b) British for the purposes of the 1963 EC Directive - on condition that the artistic and technical contribution of the member State or States in question is not less than 30% - and therefore eligible for an EC Certificate of Nationality.
New Co-production Guidelines and Application Form
The new Co-production Guidelines - Revised September 2004 (PDF 165kb) are now available. They explain the qualifying and application procedure. They are, for the most part, a statement of existing practice, and take effect immediately, except for a number of changes which are listed on page 2, and which come into effect on January 5th 2004.
