Community Radio
Community radio is a new tier of very local, not-for-profit (or not profit distributing) radio. It is different from, and complementary to, existing independent local radio. Community radio can encourage social inclusion; volunteering; local education and training; and wider access for communities broadcasting opportunities.
Community Radio Licensing Ofcom, who are responsible for licensing community radio, has completed the first round of community radio licensing, and is expecting to invite applications for the second round later this year.
The first round has seen Ofcom award over 100 licences to a huge range of stations across the UK, from one largely run by children to one aimed at older people which plays no records released before 1959. Amongst others are those targeting blind, religious, ethnic or multi ethnic communities and army personnel.
Community Radio Fund The Department has made £0.5million available for community radio for each of the years to 2007/8. Ofcom is handling grant applications to this fund.
