Sport stars

Does your child want to be the next Kelly Holmes or Amir Khan? Set on sporting success, but don’t think you can give your kids the support they need...?

Photograph of children playing basketballThe Government wants all school kids to have the chance of at least two hours a week of top quality PE and sport, both inside and outside school hours. This will not only help to develop raw talent, but will get them off the couch and keep them fit and healthy too.

We’re spending over £1 billion on public sports facilities to benefit the whole community - including schools, amateur clubs and youth centres.

Developing talent

What if you know that your child could be a sports star but you’re not sure how to help them take it to the next level? That’s where the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) comes in. This helps youngsters with a gift for sports to achieve their dreams by awarding them training worth up to £3,000.

Given the right opportunities, your child could be competing in the 2012 Olympics - which, fingers crossed, will be in London! There are also special 2012 Scholarships.

Find out more about the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme at www.tass.gov.uk or call 0191 215 6567.

Triathlete Mike Cornes, TASS Scholar at Birmingham University says:

I think the scheme is great, especially if you're prepared to put the effort in - it's one of those things where the more you put in, the more you'll get out.

Step into sport

Step into Sport is a project for young people aged 14 to 19, encouraging them to take an interest in leading and volunteering in sport that will continue in later life. A massive 4,000 16 to 19 year-olds have become community volunteers in the first two years of Step into Sport.

To see how your child could get involved in Step into Sport, visit Sport England at www.sportengland.org, or call them on 08458 508 508.

Holly (Year 11) says:

I feel I have gained a lot of skills from being able to work and communicate with various age groups, whilst having a great time.

Football crazy

The Football Foundation is the country’s largest sports charity. We’re giving them £45 million over the next few years to provide kids with better sports centres for playing football and other sports they love.
