Culture vultures

Museums, libraries and public buildings can still have a bad image. But think again - as they're really not the boring, silent places that many people imagine. They now provide a whole load of fun, interactive and cool exhibitions and things to do. And better still - most of the activities are free for kids.

Castles, stately homes and monuments also offer really exciting days out - many have great activities for kids and lots have been used as sets for films like Harry Potter. And, for an annual fee, if you become a member of organisations like English Heritage or the National Trust, you and the kids can visit them as often as you want.

Free books

Libraries offer a huge range of services you probably didn't expect - from internet access, to newspapers, magazines, as well as books to borrow, all for very little - or totally free!

Internet access is available in every public library - so your kids can surf the net whenever they like. You can also be safe in the knowledge that there is strong parental control in use, so they won't be exposed to any unsuitable sites. One site funded by us is Culture Online - full of free information and activities to keep kids amused.

Homework clubs are run by over 60 per cent of libraries and are free. Any child over eight can attend a homework club, and can stay as much or little time as they need. Each club has a homework assistant who is happy to help children looking for information to help with their homework. Parents are encouraged to attend with their children to give them support. For information on your nearest club contact your local library.

- Sam, Age 10

It’s great being able to use the internet at my library, as we don’t have a computer at home.

Open all hours

The 24hour museum has created Show me - a safe and non-commercial site for kids, aged 4 to 11. It's an exciting collection of online games and interactive content. Produced by many of the country's galleries and museums, the idea is to encourage children to enjoy and visit them.

There is a dedicated section for parents and carers. This offers ideas to help you to encourage your childrens' interest in our massive cultural heritage.

This is a great place to visit if you're stuck for ideas for a day out - either enter your ideas in the search box or click on the map to pinpoint what area you're interested in.

I hadn't got a clue what to do with the kids over the holidays - especially once it started to rain, but this site was brilliant - giving us loads of options.

See it all happen at the Houses of Parliament

Taking a trip around the Houses of Parliament is an awe-inspiring experience, suitable for older children. You can even watch famous politicians taking part in debates in the House of Commons or the House of Lords - and it's totally free.

So why not plan ahead for Autumn half-term and book a visit? The best way to do this is by contacting your local MP. For all information visit www.parliament.uk.
