Government Funding for arts
DCMS does not fund the arts directly, but through Arts Council England, the national body for the arts in England.
How much money does DCMS give to the arts?
DCMS has allocated the following grant-in-aid to Arts Council England over the next three years: -
2005/06: £410.4 million
2006/07: £410.4 million
2007/08: £410.4 million
Arms Length Principle
The relationship between DCMS and the Arts Council is governed by the 'arms length' principle. This means that Ministers cannot intervene in individual funding decisions. The Arts Council must, however, be able to account for its decisions and explain them to Parliament and the public.
Local Authorities
Local authorities are the second largest supporters of the arts in England. They are not required to provide funding for the arts, but most do. Many also support the arts through providing venues and advice & information services. See UK Online for links to all UK local authority and central Government websites.
