Space for sport and arts
Space for Sport and Arts (SSArts) is an innovative partnership between government departments and lottery distributors. This has granted £134m towards the provision of greater opportunities for both pupils and the wider community in deprived areas, to participate in arts based and sporting activities by providing new, or modernising existing, facilities in primary schools.
65 local education authorities (LEAs) and approximately 270 schools from deprived areas have benefited from the programme. In addition to capital grants, money has been set aside for revenue funding to encourage optimum use of the facilities by both the school and the community.
The aim is to improve educational standards, build communities, and ensure social inclusion in the most impoverished areas of the country by providing improved sports and arts facilities in primary schools in deprived areas, for use by children and by the wider community outside school hours.
All the planned facilities are due to be completed by December 2005. There are no plans to extend SSArts beyond those LEA's already involved in the programme.
Space for Sports and Arts is administered by Sport England on behalf of its partners. These include:
- The Department for Culture, Media and Sport
- The Department for Education and Skills
- The Big Lottery Fund
- The Arts Council
