There is growing evidence to suggest that the arts can contribute to improving health and well-being for all. Engaging with the arts can impact on the health of individuals and communities, reducing recovery times and preventing illness by improving quality of life.
The arts in healthcare settings can:
- Improve the mental, emotional and spiritual state of patients and other health service users - reducing anxiety and boredom
- Promote positive health messages
- Develop creativity in the workplace and in individuals
- Identify health care needs
- Improve the self-esteem and personal development of staff
- Help people to communicate effectively with each other (medical staff/carers/patients/families), and
- Improve staff and patient relationships and morale

Arts and Mental Health Research
DCMS and the Department of Health are commissioning research to evaluate the health benefits and social outcomes of involvement in arts projects for people with mental health problems. This research is intended to take place in 2005-2006.
