Commission for Architecture & the Built Environment
CABE was set up in 1999 to promote high quality design and the benefits it can bring to a wide audience. In this sense CABE was created by DCMS to do something new - to communicate a clear message about the need for a high quality, well designed built environment and to encourage a design literate society which demands quality in its buildings and spaces.
CABE provides an independent voice to stimulate debate and promote the very best of architecture and urban design. It uses its skills and resources to work for a higher quality of life for people and communities across England, with particular concern for those living in deprived areas. It achieves this by making the case for change, gathering hard evidence, providing education opportunities and by offering advice and support to all those who create, manage and use the built environment.
CABE works through seven programmes: design review; project enabling; public affairs and government; the regions; research; education; and CABE Space.
CABE is sponsored by DCMS and is jointly funded by DCMS and ODPM.
