DCMS has responsibility for architectural design quality. We aim to raise awareness about the importance of good architectural design in defining our environment, and to encourage high standards of design quality in building projects.
Through our sponsored body the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE), we encourage widespread interest and enthusiasm for good architecture and urban design by promoting public debate and greater participation in the processes by which architecture and urban design quality are determined.
We are also committed to developing young people's awareness of architecture and the built environment, as we believe that through education we can nurture future generations of citizens to demand well designed buildings, spaces and places.
We are also responsible for the identification and conservation of historic buildings. More infomation on our policy for historic buildings, including the listing of buildings, can be found on the historic environment pages of this website.
