BBC Charter review
The BBC's activities are governed by a Royal Charter which sets out what it is for, what it does and how it does it. An accompanying Framework Agreement reaffirms its editorial independence and sets out its public obligations in detail.
Every 10 years we review the Charter and Agreement. The 1996 Charter and Agreement expire on 31 December 2006.
Over the last three years we have undertaken a major public consultation to help decide the details of the new Charter and Agreement. The final versions of the new Charter and Agreement have now been published.
The new arrangements take full effect on 1 January 2007. Until then, certain transitional arrangements will operate and the 1996 Charter will remain in force.
