about dcms

Open Government

The Government published 'Modernising Government', the White Paper which set out the way to modernise the public service and introduce greater openness in the public sector.

The Code of Practice on Access to Government information commits Government Departments, agencies and executive public bodies to make information available, and to respond to any requests from the public for information.

Modernising Government

In response to the Modernising Government White Paper, DCMS has developed an action plan designed to:

  • improve the way policy is made in DCMS by creating a checklist for policy makers, senior officials and Ministers to follow
  • improve the responsiveness and the quality of services offered to the public by our non-departmental public bodies
  • promote better use of Information Technology
  • in response to Sir Richard Wilson's recent report on Civil Service reform, focus on leadership, business planning, performance management, and diversity

Code of Practice on Open Government: DCMS Procedural Note
Government: Code of Practice on Access to Government Information: guidance on interpretation, second edition (1997) currently only available in print, either from the DCMS Information Centre or from The Department for Constitutional Affairs  Freedom of Information & Data Protection Division.
