Millennium Commission - leaving a lasting legacy
The Millennium Commission was set up in 1994 under the National Lottery Act, to help communities celebrate the year 2000 and the beginning of the third millennium.
The commission is chaired by the Rt Hon Tessa Jowell MP, Secretary of State for Culture, Media & Sport, and is distributing over £2 billion to projects large and small across the UK.
The total value of grants awarded to millennium projects and award schemes is the largest single non-governmental investment ever made in the social and community infrastructure of the UK.
The commission stopped receiving Lottery funds in August 2001.
The Commission has supported:
- Nearly 200 capital projects, investing over £1.25 billion in over 3000 sites across the UK, including Millennium point in Birmingham, the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, cycleways across the UK, new public parks and village halls
- Millennium Awards - grants of between £2,000 and £15,000 helping individuals to help their communities, which will continue in perpetuity with a £100 million endowment fund
- Community festivals which began on New Year's Eve 1999 and finished on New Year's Eve 2000 with celebrations in 32 towns and cities across the UK
- The Millennium Experience at Greenwich and its associated National Programme of events and activities across the UK
