About the Honours system

The Honours system
The Honours system is a great way to recognise outstanding merit and service to the nation. Honours recognise the achievements of ordinary people who do extraordinary things.
Achievement comes in many forms but we are looking for nominations for people who have made a difference in their field of work or community - people who have gone that extra mile. Perhaps their achievement has brought distinction to British life and enhanced the UK's reputation in a particular area or activity. Maybe they have demonstrated innovation or entrepreneurship.
We want the Honours List to be a true reflection of the population and to reward those people who go on year after year making a difference to people's lives.
Timetable for the Honours process
Honours lists are announced twice every year, at the New Year and on the Queen's Birthday in June. We accept nominations at any time of the year. However, we work on each list several months ahead of actual publication, therefore we need to know well in advance if a nominee is due to stand down, retire or otherwise end their involvement with a particular activity.
Honours should be awarded to people who are still performing the service for which they have been recommended. It is unusual for someone who has been retired for more than 12 months at the time of publication of the list to be awarded an honour.
If you have any doubts about whether a candidate should be nominated please contact the Honours Secretary:
