In order to define and produce data on the cultural sector, the following classifications should be followed. Consistent application of all relevant classifications and definitions is crucial if data are to be comparable, and consequently credible and most meaningful.

Geography – Standard geographic bases for producing data and guidance can be found at

Socio-economic classification – A new eight category classification was introduced in 2001.
