Sir Brian, who has run the Edinburgh International Festival and is a member of the Arts Council of England, will advise the Secretary of State on how the Government can promote excellence in the arts, but do so in a light touch, non bureaucratic way, encouraging successful organisations and continuing to challenge complacency.
Mr Purnell said:
“The arts in this country are world class, and hold an incredibly important place in our society. The arts hold the ring for our national conversation. They are where we find our meanings, individually and collectively. They help us to be who we are – and they help create Britain.
“It is vital that the Government continues to support the arts and makes sure they stay truly world class, but in a way that does not stifle with unnecessary targets. I want us to review the role that Government and public funding can play in enabling excellence, how we can move from top-down targets to empowering and risk-taking.
“I am very pleased that Sir Brian has agreed to lead this review. He is a hugely experienced and respected figure in the arts field, and I look forward to his conclusions.”
Sir Brian has been asked to report to Mr Purnell in the Autumn.
