Funded jointly by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Wolfson Foundation, the grants will help improve the quality of museums’ displays, public spaces, disabled access and environmental controls.
These have been awarded in the fifth year of the current DCMS/Wolfson Foundation Museums & Galleries Improvement Fund, which has awarded £16 million to institutions around the country since it was set up in 2002.
Culture Minister David Lammy said:
“This year, the DCMS/Wolfson Museums & Galleries Improvement fund is giving out more grants than in any previous round - enabling museums and galleries to improve the care of their collections and make them more accessible and enjoyable for the public.
“From Carlisle to Kings Lynn, museums and galleries will be building new exhibition spaces, renovating galleries, restoring exhibits and improving the visitor experience.
“Our museums and galleries enjoy a worldwide reputation and the DCMS/Wolfson fund enables our institutions to provide an even higher level of service.”
Dr Victoria Harrison, Executive Secretary of the Wolfson Foundation said:
"The Trustees of the Wolfson Foundation were pleased to see that the DCMS/Wolfson Fund attracted a record number of bids this year. It is a sign that the fund is being well recognised as a means of assisting museums and galleries to improve their facilities. We are pleased that the Foundation’s partnership with DCMS has become important to so many of our cultural institutions."
