Tessa Jowell meets designer of DCMS official Christmas card

164/06

Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell today met Tessa Standen (age 11) to congratulate her on winning the competition to design the official Culture Department Christmas card, a Nativity scene that will be sent around the world.

Tessa Standen, from Darrick Wood School in the London Borough of Bromley, took part in a competition to find artists of the future, which included designing the DCMS official Christmas card for 2006. This was part of the ArtisanCam project run by Culture Online (COL).

Tessa Jowell, who judged the competition, chose the winning design, which has had a print run of 2,000 and includes the message: “Happy Christmas”

Tessa Jowell presented Tessa Standen with two small prizes:

• An iPod, provided by ArtisanCam
• A book token provided by DCMS

Tessa Standen’s school will also receive a series of art workshops for a day organised by ArtisanCam.

Tessa Jowell said:

"Everybody knows that participation by children and young people in creative activities has intrinsic value in itself, but it also benefits them in terms of pupil engagement, self-confidence and motivation.  This also has a positive effect on attainment and achievement.

“Tessa Standen’s card is brilliant. A traditional nativity scene, but with wonderfully vibrant colours that give it a modern edge.”

Notes to editors:

1. The ArtisanCam project is aimed at Key Stage 2 and 3 children (aged 7-14). Its website uses video streaming to provide a window on artists at work together with the opportunity to take part art related games and online activities such as screen-printing and sculpture. It has been very successful with teachers and children alike, and Culture Online extended its commission of the project for an extra year.

2. Culture Online was established by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) in 2002. The Culture Online team work with a variety of project partners to create highly targeted interactive resources. Culture Online projects are designed to encourage participation in the arts and culture through the innovative use of technology. For more information please visit the Culture Online website

3. The chosen design and those of the runners-up will be featured on the ‘winners’ gallery’ page on the ArtisanCam.
