Over the years the BBC has set and maintained the standards for the whole industry, and more recently has been instrumental in driving digital take-up and developing new services through the internet.

I view any threat to the license fee with suspicion - the BBC is a flagship for British Excellence in broadcating internationally; and internally it sets a high standard that generally drives and promotes, rather than stifles, competition.
