My thoughts on the BBC's obsession with digital services at the expense of mainstream TV channels Dear Sirs, I understand from the BBC website that you are compiling input from the public about the BBC's digital services. I have a few comments to make:- * It is iniquitous to exclude the vast majority of licence payers by putting new programmes onto a digital channel first, before they appear on mainstream channels. * It would be much fairer to use digital channels to repeat output, but under no circumstances is it justified to put the initial showing onto digital first. * Many homes have more than one television, so even if they have invested in a new digital TV or digibox, it is unlikely that all their viewing opportunities will enable them to use digital equipment. So even, when homes are counted in the 'able to view digital services' totals, it is extremely likely that much of their viewing time (in bedroom, kitchen, playroom, etc) will exclude the digital experience. Therefore, your assumptions about numbers able to use the new digital services are flawed and distorted. * BBC digital channels should not be offered free of charge, except to educational establishments. * There should be a pay for viewing digital system in homes. At present, all licence payers are subsidising the very few digital viewers. * The BBC should come clean about it's advertising policy. The Corporation spends many hours each day, between every single programme, advertising their own programmes and services. This is advertising. The BBC should charge the relevant programme providers accordingly. Especially as many of these programme providers are independent bodies. While charging for these adverts, the BBC could also add in other adverts and charge for them. This would be a much more honest policy. * Instead of giving free access to their very good website, the BBC should also charge for this, by allowing reputable advertisers to take space. I hope these comments are included in your review. Regards Brenda Butler
