Using the historic definition (gross nominal liabilities of the National Loans Fund) the most recent published figure for the National Debt was £448,006,333,974 (31 March 2003) . As the Bank of England pointed out in a recent article, there are better measures, in particular Public Sector Net Debt, for which figures are published monthly by the Office for National Statistics.
