The statutory functions of the Commissioners for the Reduction of the National Debt (CRND) are carried out in the UK Debt Management Office. Today CRND's main function is the investment and management of government funds. It can be contacted at:
CRND cannot give advice on personal debt problems. Those seeking such advice might wish to contact the National Debtline or the Consumer Credit Counselling Service. Using the historic definition (gross nominal liabilities of the National Loans Fund) the most recent published figure for the National Debt was £448,006,333,974 (31 March 2003) . As the Bank of England pointed out in a recent article, there are better measures, in particular Public Sector Net Debt, for which figures are published monthly by the Office for National Statistics.
