Selling to the MoD - Exports

THE DEFENCE EXPORT SERVICES ORGANISATION (DESO)
Your visit to this website already confirms one important issue - your interest in selling your products and services to the UK Armed Forces. However, if you are a UK-based defence manufacturer have you ever thought about selling or tried unsuccessfully to sell to overseas
government forces? DESO is here to help. DESO is an integral part of the UK Ministry of Defence, acting as a focal point within HM Government for all defence export-related activities. Its role is to provide assistance to UK defence companies and to overseas customers interested in acquiring UK defence products. It is able to assist UK companies involved in the export market in a number of ways, including:

  • Briefing companies new to defence exporting
  • Bringing overseas customers and UK suppliers together
  • Advising UK firms on defence market prospects on a world-wide,
    regional or country basis
  • Providing professional military advice and assistance in support
    of sales
  • Organising defence exhibitions, inward missions and equipment
demonstrations, both in the UK and overseas
  • Ensuring that overseas sales considerations are given due weight
in the MoD's own procurement process
  • Providing advice on defence export finance, reciprocal trade
    obligations and offset
  • Negotiating and administrating Government-to-Government sales
  • Offering world-wide logistic support

DESO is not just about helping the big boys. A unit dedicated to providing first line support and advice to all UK defence SMEs has recently been established.

For more information on DESO visit the website (www.deso.mod.uk).

A CHARTER FOR PARTNERSHIP: DESO SUPPORT FOR UK SMALL BUSINESSES
Small businesses make a vital contribution to the UK defence industrial base and to defence exports. The Defence Export Services Organisation (DESO) is an integral part of the UK MoD, acting as a focal point within government for all defence export-related activities. DESO’s prime function is to help secure maximum success for UK plc in the defence export market.

DESO is firmly committed to improving the service for and building a closer business relationship with small firms and, with this in mind, the Head of Defence Export Services launched a new initiative – “The SME Charter” - at the March 2004 DESO Symposium. The Charter aims to encourage small businesses to engage with DESO on a more formal footing. This will allow DESO to provide more detailed and focused support than before while, at the same time, collecting a range of statistical data and information (on a strictly “in-confidence” basis) that will help to identify future markets and contribute to the greater benefit of UK plc. A copy of the Charter can be read and downloaded from here.

DESO does not wish to be too prescriptive in its definition of SME. It is fully prepared to assist anyone needing help.

“Signing up” to the Charter is entirely free and simple to do and [name of Trade Association, etc] encourages you to do so. Just send an email, with company details and point of contact, to any of the DESO Small Business team listed on the Charter. Confirm that your company is willing to work with DESO under the terms of the Charter and they will be in touch with you. If you have any questions before committing to the Charter do not hesitate to ask the DESO team.
