Computer Aid is recruiting for a permanent Chief Executive Officer
Computer Aid International has been working since 1998 to reduce poverty through practical ICT solutions. We provide high quality, professionally refurbished computers and laptops for reuse in education, health, agriculture and not-for-profit organisations in developing countries and work with partners to deliver training and support. We also work on initiatives designed to further increase access to ICT amongst poor and disadvantaged communities. Recent projects include the supply of telemedicine equipment, linking remote medical centres with city hospitals and specialists, the provision of solar-powered ICT solutions, rural wireless connectivity and, most recently, the launch of a new training enterprise based in our Nairobi office. We are also currently developing free and open source software for people who are blind or visually impaired. We operate a social enterprise model, generating more than half of our income from fees for products and services which helps ensure our responsiveness to the needs of our partners and beneficiaries. Computer Aid dispatches 125 PCs to schools in Zimbabwe through UNESCO ASPnet
This afternoon we dispatched computers to schools in Zimbabwe through our partner the UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet). UNESCO ASPnet was Founded in 1953, it is a global network of more than 9,000 educational institutions in 180 countries. Member institutions – ranging from pre-schools, primary, secondary and vocational schools to teacher training institutions - work in support of international understanding, peace, intercultural dialogue, sustainable development and quality education in practice. The computers provided by Computer Aid will be distributed by the Zimbabwe network: Associated Schools Chipinge District. The network brings together a collaboration of local schools in Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwe Ministry of Education and UNESCO ASPnet in Zimbabwe. The network aims to bring schools together enabling them to participate in the UNESCO associated schools network for international co-operation and quality education for all. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a key pillar for the network to help advance education in the district. ICT encompasses computer training, technical support and content development within the member schools. Just one computer and monitor donated to Computer Aid can provide 6,000 hours of further use, which is enough to educate 60 children to a vocational level in ICT and significantly increases their employment prospects.
