COMPETITION COMMISSION INVITES EVIDENCE ON THE COMPLETED ACQUISITION BY VNU OF BOOK DATA

Melanie Johnson, Competition Minister, has asked the Competition Commission to look into the completed acquisition of Book Data Ltd by VNU Entertainment Media UK Ltd (formerly J Whitaker and Sons Ltd).

The Commission will decide whether the merger may be expected to operate against the public interest, and if so recommend what action should be taken to remedy the adverse effects foreseen. It will look at competition concerns relating to the market for bibliographic data services and the provision of electronic ordering systems for the book trade in the UK. The Commission will report to the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry by 6 February 2003. The report will be published later.

The Commission would like to hear from all interested parties, in writing, by 12 November 2002. To submit evidence, please write to:
