Members’ interests:

Peter Freeman, Chairman of the Competition Commission, has appointed Carolan Dobson and Christopher Bright as two of the Members of the Group that is conducting this investigation.

Carolan Dobson has small shareholdings in Royal Dutch Shell and Cairn Energy. She is also a trustee of the Colquhoun charity, which provides benefits to the chronically ill in Glasgow, and which owns shares in Glaxo Smith Kline and Royal Dutch Shell. All of these companies actually or potentially purchase Mass Spectrometers. Neither Mrs Dobson, nor the CC, believes that this matter will prejudice the ability of the Group to discharge its functions in an independent and impartial manner.

Christopher Bright was a partner in Shearman & Sterling LLP until February 2006, and is now an independent consultant in which capacity he continues to provide some advice to Shearman & Sterling. Shearman & Sterling has worked in the last two years for two competitor companies to the parties to this inquiry, although not in relation to the relevant sectors. Mr Bright did not personally work for any such client. Neither Mr Bright, nor the CC, believes that this matter will prejudice the ability of the Group to discharge its functions in an independent and impartial manner.
