Ensuring sustainability and minimising adverse impact on the environment are crucial aspects of the planning agenda. Both apply at all scales, from individual buildings and developments to national and international policy and are key parts of the Government's commitment to sustainable development and the creation of sustainable communities.

Assessing the sustainability and environmental impact of developments and policy prior to implementation is one of the first key stages in meeting these commitments.
