The Local Innovation Awards Scheme was jointly established by Communities and Local Government (CLG) and the Local Government Association (LGA) in 2009.
The scheme aims to identify and celebrate excellent service delivery by local partnerships; support the effective scaling up and sharing of good practice and bright ideas; and help winners to innovate and reform the way they deliver local services. It is a key part of our strategy to strengthen how we provide practical help and support to local partnerships and communities to deliver the challenges they face. Award holders will receive a financial incentive to enhance improvement on behalf of the sector, to teach others how to improve their services, by spreading their own winning ideas and best practice to other localities. This will raise standards across the board, helping local people enjoy better services.
In this first year of the scheme, applications were invited in six themes; four 'Delivery' and two 'Challenge'. The selected themes were all linked, and developed from the top twenty LAA priorities identified by local areas nationally as being those most important to their areas.
The Delivery themes were:
The Challenge themes were:
Running across all six themes were the 'Bright Ideas' awards. These are aimed at front line teams, who had an innovative idea which they wanted to develop.
The first awards were announced on 2 March 2010. The details can be found in the press release in the right hand column.
The Improvement and development Agency (IDeA) administers the delivery and support of the scheme. More details on the scheme can be found in the related links section in the right hand column.
