Service Personnel Command Paper - Housing Commitments Fact Sheet
In July 2008, Government published a Command Paper to support Service personnel, their families and Veterans - The Nation's Commitment: Cross-Government Support to the Armed Forces, their Families and Veterans (external link).
Recognising the valuable contribution of the Armed Forces, the Command Paper announced a number of significant measures to ensure that current and ex-service personnel have access to the accommodation that they and their families need.
For example, it included new measures to remove means testing for seriously injured veterans requiring adaptations to their homes, as well as funding to provide new supported accommodation so that ex-service personnel who are seriously injured or at risk of homelessness have the support, skills and training they need to make the successful transition into civilian life.
Other changes will ensure that Service leavers are not disadvantaged because of their time in the forces when applying for social and affordable housing, as well as helping to ensure that, if injured in the line of duty, they will get improved access to the specialised accommodation that they need and deserve.
An Annual Report recording the progress made across Government in implementing the various commitments in the Command Paper was published on 19 November 2009. Excellent progress has been made in delivering on all of Communities and Local Government's commitments.
As a follow up to the Command Paper commitments, in July 2009, the Ministry of Defence (MOD), published a consultation paper asking for views on various options for ensuring enduring support to the Command Paper measures. The consultation closed on 31 October 2009 and MOD are currently analysing the responses received. A decision on the best option for taking this forward is expected to be made in the new year.
This section provides key facts and updates about the housing commitments in the Service Personnel Command Paper in a question and answer format on various issues, including why the commitments were introduced, who will be affected and when they came into force.
