Housing supply

For decades not enough new homes have been provided to meet the needs of our growing population. We are committed to meeting those needs by increasing housing supply and helping people who aspire to buy their own home.

The New Homes Bonus is a powerful, simple and transparent incentive for housing growth and is a key part of the housing growth focus of our national strategy, which we published on 21 November 2011. The New Homes Bonus ensures that those local authorities which promote and welcome growth can share in the economic benefits, and build the communities in which people want to live and work. Further details of the scheme design and allocations can be found below under 'In this section'.

New homes won't be imposed on communities. Local people will take control of the way their villages, towns and cities develop and have a bigger say in how their neighbourhood is designed. Local authorities will deliver sustainable development where it's needed and wanted, so that communities benefit from housing growth. We will also help more people build their own homes and bring empty homes back into use.
