Communitybuilders is a £70m investment fund which takes forward a commitment within the Communities in Control: real people, real power White Paper to build more cohesive, empowered and active communities.
The fund is jointly run by Communities and Local Government and the Office of the Third Sector and designed to strengthen the resilience of multi-purpose community-led organisations across England through a mixture of financial and advisory support.
Communitybuilders will seek bids from organisations, often known as 'community anchors' (which include but are not limited to development trusts, settlements and multi-purpose community organisations).
Key features of such organisations include:
The aim of the Communitybuilders programme is to help anchor organisations work towards long term financial stability so they can meet the needs of their communities for generations to come. There are many ways that anchor organisations can become viable over the long term including through the taking on and running of assets, taking on contracts for service provision and the establishment of a social and community enterprises.
Communitybuilders will provide a mix of loans, grants and non-financial support at different stages of the project cycle, supporting both existing organisations and newly formed organisations. For more information on Communitybuilders please visit www.communitybuildersfund.org.uk (external link) or email communitybuilders@communities.gsi.gov.uk.
The programme will be delivered, on behalf of Communities and Local Government and the Office of the Third Sector, by a consortium led by Adventure Capital Fund (ACF). ACF will use their knowledge and experience of the third sector and community organisations to deliver the programme in the most effective manner. The programme will be open to applications at the end of the summer 2009. For more information see the ACF news release (external link).
A series of regional roadshows, Real Help for Communities, organised by the Government, ran from April to June, in English regions.
The roadshows provided delegates with a great opportunity to gain practical understanding of various funds available to communities including the Communitybuilders, Modernisation and Targeted Support funds.
If you missed them the presentation from the roadshow is available below.
