The VMP is a £3 million programme designed to support the professional development of volunteer managers.
It has been developed in response to the findings of the 2008 Commission on the Future of Volunteering. The Commission’s final report concluded that effective volunteering requires well managed volunteers, and an investment in volunteer management infrastructure.
The VMP is funded by the Office of the Third Sector and is being delivered by Capacitybuilders. It consists of three strands:
Strand A – Twenty four local projects have been awarded grants totalling £1.45 million. These projects will provide a range of support for volunteer managers in their areas including new resources and networking services. They will also promote existing training and development opportunities.
Strand B – Volunteering England is working to bring together guidance, resources and information on existing development opportunties in order to make them easier to access.
Strand B will also promote the importance of effective volunteer management and identify and disseminate learning and best practice from Strand A projects.
Strand C – £1 million pounds worth of bursary support will be made available to help meet some of the development needs of individuals managing volunteers. The bursaries will be made available through two development programmes available England wide from Spring 2010. The first will support those coordinating volunteering activity day to day; the second will focus more on those with management and strategic responsibilities.
