The National Survey of Volunteering and Charitable Giving – Helping Out is a new household survey of adults (aged 16 and over) in England. It asks for details of people's views and experiences of participation in voluntary activity and charitable giving. The survey is being carried out for the first time in 2006/07. It includes approximately 2,800 interviews with people who were previously interviewed for the Citizenship Survey, including 700 interviews with people from minority ethnic groups.
The aim of the National Survey of Volunteering and Charitable Giving is to build upon the findings of the Citizenship Survey to find out more detail about how and why people participate.
The survey provides information about respondent's participation in formal volunteering (through a group, club or organisation) both over the past year and over a longer timeframe. It explores people's level and type of involvement with different organisations, as well as how and why people become involved with organisations. The survey also covers people's experiences of volunteering, in terms of the levels of support they've received and what they perceive to be the positive and negative aspects of their experiences. In addition, the survey explores the reasons why people do not give unpaid help on a regular basis, and whether there is anything that would make it easier for them to give help in the future.
On charitable giving, the survey looks at the amounts, methods and causes to which people give money to charity. It also examines people's awareness and use of tax–efficient giving methods. In addition, it investigates people's motivations for giving as well as the reasons why some people decide not to give money to charity. Finally, the survey picks up on the links between people's volunteering and charitable giving.
The results of the survey aims to provide a wealth of data that will enable the Office of the Third Sector, as well as practitioners and funders to target and manage programmes in support of volunteering and giving, and to challenge further the barriers to participation, particularly for those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Headline findings will be available in early Summer 2007.
