I was delighted to be appointed as Minister for the Third Sector and over the past six months I’ve been inspired by so many of you around the country that I’ve had the opportunity to talk to.
What’s clear to me - is that at a time when families and communities have been put under increased pressure - the services, advice and support you provide has been especially vital.
I’ve also been struck by the focused way in which the sector has come together to work in partnership to resolve local problems, alongside the thousands of people who have come forward to volunteer and the innovations originating from our growing social enterprise sector.
As 2009 draws to a close and we look back there is much to be proud of. Of course it’s been a challenging year, but the effectiveness of the sector’s response, helping local communities weather the storm and keep working to change our society for the better, has been inspirational.
Britain undoubtedly has the best charity sector in the world and over the coming year I will work tirelessly to champion the sector throughout government and beyond. I know there is much to be done and I will ensure that the sector is supported and has a strong voice within government, helping it to thrive.
From volunteers in Lancashire to social enterprises in Lands End, from care workers in Newcastle to advice workers in Norwich, it is people like you that make Britain a better place.
Thank you for all that you do - for your commitment, your compassion and your much valued achievements in 2009.
With my best wishes for Christmas and the New Year.
Angela Smith, Minister for the Third Sector
