'Give with care' campaign cuts collection bag thefts

There has been a 30 per cent fall in the number of collection bag thefts since the launch of the awareness-raising initiative; Give with care, according to research by Clothes Aid.

In December 2007, the Office of the Third Sector teamed up with the Charity Commission, the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), the Trading Standards Institute (TSI), representatives from the charity sector and other stakeholders to tackle the problem of bogus charity clothing collections by raising public awareness of the issue.

We launched a consumer awareness drive across England and Wales to ensure that people who want their donated clothes and other goods to go to a charity know what information to look out for on leaflets and bags that come through their letter box.

According to research by Clothes Aid, the company which carries out doorstep collections for charities, there has been a 30 per cent fall in the number of bag thefts since the launch of the campaign. This type of theft costs the sector more than £2.5m a year, according to Clothes Aid.

The awareness raising leaflets can be printed from the links below as well as other stakeholder websites.
