Phil Hope, Minister for the Third Sector, has announced the appointment of John Wood as a legally-qualified member of the Charity Commission board. John will succeed Lindsay Driscoll on 1 February 2008. In addition, existing board members John Williams and Tess Woodcraft have been re-appointed to the Commission’s Board.
John is former Head of Trusts and Charities at Herbert Smith and now works as a consultant for the firm. He is a member of the Charity Law Association and the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners.
Phil Hope, Minister for the Third Sector said:
“I am pleased to announce the appointment of John Wood to the Charity Commission board. The Government recognises the important role that charities play in our society and wants to create the right conditions for them to thrive. We are currently implementing the Charities Act 2006, the biggest shake up of charity law for 400 years. John's wealth of experience will be a considerable benefit to the Commission at this important time.”
Dame Suzi Leather, Chair of the Charity Commission said:
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Lindsay Driscoll for her tremendous service to the Commission over the last four-and-a-half years; she has played a key part in helping us prepare for and take forward our new responsibilities under the Charities Act 2006. With John's appointment the Commission's expanded Board is now complete, meaning we are in good shape to anticipate and meet the challenges that still lie ahead. The breadth of expertise, skills and experience represented on our new Board is fantastic, and crucial in enabling us to fulfil our role of increasing the effectiveness of charities.”
John Wood will sit alongside existing Board members John Williams, Tess Woodcraft, Sharmila Nebhrajani, Dr Andrew Purkis OBE, Theo Sowa, Simon Wethered and Simon Jones.
The Minister has also agreed to re-appoint serving Board members John Williams and Tess Woodcraft, who are both shortly coming to the end of their current three-year terms. This recognises the valuable contribution that both John and Tess have made to the Commission’s board, and the importance of retaining their skills and experience during a period of major change for the Commission. John Williams will be re-appointed for a period of two years from 4 January 2008, and Tess Woodcraft for a period of one year from 1 May 2008.
