Minister confirms free Criminal Record Bureau checks for volunteers

Phil Hope, Minister for the Third Sector, has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment that volunteers will not have to pay for Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks that are required for volunteers working with children and in other sensitive roles.

On 4 December the Minister joined volunteers from the Shades of Black project that works with local schools to provide a range of activities and inter-generational opportunities for young people. At the visit, the Minister reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to free police checks for volunteers in response to concerns voiced by some voluntary sector organisations that they would face charges for checks in the future. This will allow those groups to plan their activities with certainty.

Phil Hope, Minister for the Third Sector said:

“The Government values the huge contribution that volunteers make to our society and this commitment is just a small part of our ongoing work to remove barriers to volunteering and encourage more people to get involved.”
