Phil Hope congratulates Giving Nation award-winners

Phil Hope with the award-winners from Felpham Community College

29 October 2007

Minister for the Third Sector Phil Hope has congratulated the winners of the Giving Nation Awards for Charitable Action 2007, and praised their achievements in charitable giving, campaigning and volunteering.

Felpham Community College in Sussex was the national winner for its outstanding charity and campaigning work, which included an entire week dedicated to charitable activity. Students from the college will travel to Kenya in 2008 to visit a charity which prevents and cures blindness.

Eight other schools received regional awards for their achievements and a cash prize to contribute towards further charitable activity.

Schools across the country entered the awards by writing diaries on the G-Nation website [external website] describing their philanthropic activities over the course of a year and the impact they had on the community and wider society.

The awards are part of the Giving Nation Challenge, funded by the Office of the Third Sector, which provides curriculum materials on charitable giving for secondary school citizenship classes.

Phil Hope told the award-winners:

“Programmes like Giving Nation and the Giving Nation Challenge allow young people like you to fulfil your potential, make you feel good about yourselves and proud of your friends and they allow you to see the difference positive action can make – and this is what I believe being a good, active citizen is all about.”
