The public is being invited to nominate community groups who give their time to help others for the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service 2008. Nominations need to be in ahead of the deadline at the end of September.

The award is a unique UK-wide honour celebrating outstanding achievements by groups of volunteers, which was originally created to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee in April 2002. Over 560 voluntary groups have so far won the award, including 71 groups in 2007.

Phil Hope, Minister for the Third Sector, said:

“Voluntary groups give so much to enrich the lives of others but, even more than this, the work they do holds our society together by giving everyone the chance to be included in their community.

“We all benefit from the efforts and social conscience of volunteers across the country. They are a great example to us all, so we urge people to give them a boost now by nominating them for the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service 2008.”

If you know a volunteering group that is really making a difference to its community, then nomination forms are available from the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service website [External website] or by calling 0845 000 2002.

The deadline for nominations is 30 September 2007.

The winners will be announced on 2 June 2008.
