Government announces new Welsh appointment to Charity Commission Board

Phil Hope, Minister for the Third Sector, has announced the appointment of the Simon Jones as the fifth, and final, new Board member joining the Charity Commission this summer. Simon has particular experience of the Welsh voluntary and charitable sector.

He is chair of the Communities First Support Network in Wales and Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust. He was Chief Executive of the Wales Co–operative Centre for ten years. Simon has a strong community regeneration and development background in Wales with extensive non–executive Board membership.

This announcement follows a provision made in the Charities Act 2006 for the Charity Commission to become a body corporate, and for its Board to be expanded to a maximum of nine. This provision came into force on 27 February 2007. This appointment has been confirmed following consultation with the National Assembly for Wales.

Simon Jones will sit alongside existing Board members John Williams, Tess Woodcraft and Lindsay Driscoll. He will join the recently announced new Board members Sharmila Nebhrajani, Dr Andrew Purkis OBE, Theo Sowa and Simon Wethered, who take up their posts later this summer.

Phil Hope, Minister for the Third Sector said:

“I am pleased to announce the appointment of Simon Jones to the Board of the Charity Commission. Simon's broad experience of the third sector in Wales will be an asset to the Commission's Board. The new Board members join the Commission at an important time, and I am confident that their wealth of talent and experience will be of considerable benefit to the Commission at it takes forward the implementation of the Charities Act.”

Dame Suzi Leather, Chair of the Charity Commission said:

“This is an exciting and challenging time for the Charity Commission, as we take forward our new responsibilities. The context in which charities in Wales work presents particular challenges and opportunities and Simon's extensive experience with the sector in Wales will be crucial in enabling us to fulfil our role of helping to increase the effectiveness of charities there.”
