The first commencement order under the Charities Act 2006 has been published. It will bring a number of provisions of the Act into force on 27 February 2007.
The Charities Act 2006 modernises the legal and regulatory framework for charities in England and Wales. It has been described as the most significant reform of charity law in modern times.
The first provisions of the Act come into force on 27 February 2007. These will modernise the Charity Commission (the independent regulator of charities in England and Wales), help tackle trustees' concerns about personal liability, and introduce some deregulatory changes for charities.
These changes are being brought into effect by the Charities Act 2006 (Commencement No 1, Transitional Provisions and Savings) Order 2007, which was published on 13 February 2007.
