Beacon Councils – Positive youth engagement
The eight local councils which were awarded Beacon Council status for ‘Positive Youth Engagement’ in March 2006 are:
- Gateshead Metropolitan District Council
- City of Wakefield Metropolitan Borough Council
- West Sussex County Council
- Derwentside District Council
- Lancashire County Council
- London Borough of Lewisham
- South Norfolk District Council & Norfolk County Council
- Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council
The 8 winners are a broad spectrum of different types of authority, from London Metropolitan to the very rural, with 6 of the 9 English regions represented.
The positive youth engagement beacons will work jointly and individually to:
- provide direct support and practical examples to assist those working with young people in a range of settings enabling them to address the Hear By Right framework.
- provide direct support and practical examples of how to engage senior decision makers in local authorities with regard to the youth agenda.
- work with national bodies, using the combined experience of beacon authorities to provide advice and recommendations to inform emerging policy and practice.
