How can the UK achieve sustainable economic growth in the future?

In September 2009 the Strategy Unit and the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (DBIS) led a seminar entitled "How can the UK achieve sustainable economic growth in the future?". The seminar was designed to draw together leading academics, commentors and policy makers to discuss future challenges, prospects and opportunities for growth.

The Strategy Unit and DBIS opened the event, setting out the current context and presenting a sector analysis of how different parts of the UK economy have grown.

Leading academics then picked up key issues: Jonathan Haskel (Imperial College London) on the role 'intangible' capital in the UK; Rachel Griffith (University College London and the Institute for Fiscal Studies) on productivity performance in the retail sector and in business services; Alan Hughes (Cambridge) on the role of innovation in driving future growth and Chris Humphries (UK Commission for Employment and Skills) on the role of the education and skills system.

Top commentators provided provocation and wider discussion: Will Hutton, (Work Foundation) and Martin Wolf (Financial Times).
