Professor Kate Jenkins presentation looked at how Public institutions face a crisis. Most are ill equipped to provide the services expected of them. Social, economic and political pressures clash with expectations that public services should provide competent, reliable and efficient service. Large institutions find it particularly difficult to recognise changing demands and to adapt elaborate systems. Politicians as well as management face conflicting priorities particularly where policy and public expectations outstrip what can be achieved. Realism about what should be promised and what can be done will be essential.
