The consultation document sets out a series of questions on key issues facing the industry over the next 10-15 years. Responses to the consultation will help the Strategy Unit to examine the medium to long-term challenges facing the UK's fishing industry. The initiative came from the industry at a meeting between the Prime Minister, the fisheries ministers and fishing industry leaders in January. The meeting identified the need for a longer-term strategy for the fishing industry. Today's publication takes the initiative one stage further.
The Strategy Unit's study aims to develop a long-term strategy for a sustainable sea fishing industry in the UK. It will take into account:
The Fisheries Minister, Elliot Morley is sponsor minister for the project. He said:
'The Strategy Unit team has already met many of those involved in the fishing industry as part of its efforts to reach a shared vision for a sustainable future for the fishing industry and for the communities that depend on it.
'This is just the start of the process that will ensure it is the views of all those connected with the fishing industry that will shape this study.
'The consultation document gives everyone a formal chance to put over their views about the issues that we face and it is designed to seek their views on the possible ways forward. A stakeholder group is to be convened on 19th June to seek their views. I hope all stakeholders, including individuals will take this opportunity to contribute to the review.'
1. Copies of the document are available on the Strategy Unit website (www.strategy.gov.uk) or by telephoning 020 7276 1881. Closing date for responses is 19 August 2003.
2. At a meeting with representatives of the UK fishing industry at the start of January, the Prime Minister agreed on the need for a project setting out options for the fishing industry for the medium to long-term.
The objective of the project is to develop a long-term strategy for the sustainable future of the UK marine fishing industry. The strategy should be based on the need for sustainable management of marine resources and ecosystems, and take account of the diverse and changing circumstances of fishing and related industries, and the social and economic development of communities which depend on fishing activity.
The strategy should provide a guide for policy development by the various fisheries departments, for the UK's approach to EU and international negotiations and for planning by the catching industry and associated sectors. The final report is intended to be completed by December 2003
3. The Strategy Unit provides the Prime Minister and Government departments with a capacity to analyse major cross-cutting and strategic policy issues and to design solutions to problems.
4. The project team, is working closely with the fisheries departments: the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Scottish Executive, the Welsh Assembly Government, and the Northern Ireland Office, as well as Scotland Office, Wales Office, No. 10, and other key government departments.
